James “Chip” Harrington, the Ludlow business-owner and part-time police officer, is seeking an electoral rematch with state Sen. Eric Lesser.

Harrington announced his Republican candidacy Wednesday morning for the state’s First Hampden and Hampshire Senate District, which includes his hometown of Ludlow, Hampden, Granby, Longmeadow and East Longmeadow, as well as parts of Springfield and Belchertown.

In an announcement video, Harrington said he would address growing threats to public safety and living standards in Western Massachusetts, including the opioid addiction crisis and violent crime.

“I am running for State Senate because I refuse to sit back and watch the quality of life here in the Pioneer Valley continue to deteriorate,” Harrington said in the video. “Each year violent crime continues to rise, more and more people are becoming addiction to opiates and heroin, our public schools continue to overemphasize high-stakes testing and there are less young families committed to our region because of a lack of career opportunities.”
